Saas-Fee
The village of Saas-Fee lies in an idyllic valley in the south of Switzerland, where it is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps. Thirteen four-thousand-metre peaks surround the village, which is known as “the Pearl of the Alps”. Lying in the Saas Valley, it has a number of well-stocked shops and numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. Cars are not allowed into the village, though there is excellent and highly reliable public transport providing links to both neighbouring towns and villages, and major cities and airports.
In winter the high altitude of the valley (1,800 metres) guarantees good snow, and it is possible to ski as high as 3,600 metres. There are several mountain cableways providing access to the slopes, and one mountain is dedicated to sledging.
In the summer the Saas Valley enjoys a mild evenly-balanced climate, as is demonstrated by the high tree line and the colourful Alpine flora. There is over 350 km of hiking paths in the valley, providing anything from a casual stroll through Alpine meadows to rather more energetic hiking, and including guided walks to the snow-clad peaks. There is a wide variety of summer activities available.
